If you own a home anywhere between Pasadena and Texas City, you already know what humidity does to flooring. Solid hardwood cups and gaps with the seasons. Laminate swells at the seams the first time something spills. Carpet holds moisture and smell. That's why luxury vinyl plank has taken over Gulf Coast homes.
LVP is waterproof through the whole thickness of the plank, not just on the surface. A dishwasher leak, a pet accident, or water tracked in during a storm doesn't destroy it. On slab foundations — which most Houston-area homes have — it also handles the minor moisture that comes up through concrete far better than wood ever will.
It's also genuinely durable. The wear layer on a quality LVP shrugs off dog nails, dropped pans, and kids' furniture. And it's warmer and quieter underfoot than tile, which matters more than people expect in a house where you're barefoot most of the year.
But the material is only half of it. A good LVP job lives or dies on subfloor prep. The slab has to be ground down or floated flat — any dip or high spot telegraphs straight through the plank and eventually pops the seams apart. We check flatness across the whole floor before a single plank goes down, and we level what needs leveling.
The other detail that separates a real installation from a rushed one is transitions and trim. Room-to-room transitions should be tight and flat, expansion gaps at the walls need to be correct for the run length, and new baseboard or quarter-round should cover the gap cleanly. Skip any of that and the floor will tell on itself within a year.
